In a video on social media, he explained that he cannot continue asking for money for his campaign when “it is clear that the majority wants to give Donal Trump another chance.” The former president and former US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, are now the only ones in the running.
The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantisannounced this on Sunday leave the primaries for the Republican presidential nomination and has expressed support for the candidacy of former President Donald Trump.
With his withdrawal, the Republican Party’s internal race is down to two: the former president trump and the former US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley.
“If there was anything I could do to achieve a favorable outcome, more meetings, more interviews, … I would do it, but I cannot ask our supporters to continue to volunteer their time and donate their resources . That is why today I am suspending my campaign,” De Santis explained in a video broadcast via social networks, with two days to go until the decisive primaries in New Hampshire.
He assured that in his message ‘It’s clear it’s the majority of the Republican primaries want to give him a chance new opportunity for Donald Trump“.
DeSantis has claimed he has had “disagreements” with Trump but has insisted he is a much better choice than current President Joe Biden.
“You have my support because we cannot return to the old Republican guard of yesteryear,” said the governor, who has attacked Haley because he sees her as a representative of “corporatism” and concessions to the “woke” (progressive) ideology.
DeSantis, governor of Florida since 2019 and representative of the party’s hard wing, launched his candidacy in March last year, when polls showed him as the best. the only one who can beat Trump in the primaries, but his image has been on the decline over the past year.
During the Iowa caucuses on January 15, the first date of the Republican race, De Santis finished in second place, behind Trump and ahead of Haley. However, opinion polls put him in third place, well behind his two rivals, in the key New Hampshire primary, which will be held next Tuesday.
Although Trump is the big favorite in the primaries, Nikki Haley has thrown herself into the campaign in New Hampshire to close the gap and profile herself within the party as an alternative to Trump.
