A tragic industrial accident overshadowed the renovation work along the Franz Josef Railway in Lower Austria: On Sunday evening, a mechanic was hit and killed by a train in the Klosterneuburg area. Apparently, he had ignored the warning signal.

According to information from the state police headquarters, he probably ignored a warning signal for approaching trains around 10 p.m. When the set thundered through the construction site in the cadastral municipality of Höflein, the man was still in the danger zone.
The man died from his injuries
The worker, who was carrying out renovation work on behalf of a company along the Franz Josef railway line, was hit by the train. “He succumbed to his fatal injuries at the scene of the accident,” the director said. The responsible labour inspectorate was called in to investigate.
Not the first incident
A month ago, a serious accident occurred during construction work on the track. At that time, an excavator driver had parked his construction machine so badly next to the track that an approaching train collided with the shovel and derailed it. The damage to the track is enormous and will probably not be repaired until September. By then, a replacement rail service had been set up.
