According to a current study from Germany, global warming can be stronger in the long term than previously assumed.
The purpose of the Paris agreement to maintain global warming on two degrees Celsius can only be achieved in “scenarios with very low emissions and in the case of lower climate sensitivity than currently accepted in the best estimate,” warned the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (cock) on Monday.
Even with emissions scenarios with regard to “safe”, climate disconnection, such as defrosting permafrost, could float temperatures above two degrees Celsius. The researchers therefore require a faster reduction of emissions and active CO₂ removal. In her opinion, the time window for the Paris climate goal closes quickly, because the earth system loses stability, which can also accelerate global warming.
“What we are doing today will form life on this planet for centuries,” was Cock-director Johan Rockström, co-author of the study on the side of the Institute, quoted. “The time window to keep the warming under two degrees Celsius closes quickly. We are already seeing that the earth system is losing stability – this can cause feedback that increases climate sensitivity and therefore leads to accelerated warming and deviations from previous predictions,” Rockström continues.
