Dozens of people have been buried in a landslide in southwestern China’s Yunnan province. The earth masses hit the village of Liangshui on Monday evening. Civil protection responded with dozens of vehicles and about 300 helpers.
Two people were found dead under the rubble of destroyed houses on Monday morning (local time), Chinese state television reported. Initial findings said authorities believed 47 people were missing, the country’s state media said.
Authorities have removed more than 200 people from the area, according to Xinhua news agency. It is still unclear how many people died in the accident.
Rescue workers are looking for buried victims
State television showed images of a path ripped through the mountainside by the mudslide and images of rescuers searching the rubble for people. Around noon (local time), the station reported that helpers had found a survivor.
The accident is said to have occurred at night. It is not known how the landslide occurred. The temperature at the accident site was around freezing point. It had snowed the night before. According to the report, the buried houses were all built on a steep slope.
