Be careful, sleet! Last night’s freezing weather conditions already caused the first traffic accidents. In Burgenland, eight students were slightly injured in a bus accident after the car left the road due to icy conditions and slid into a petrol pump. In Styria, a gritter even came off the road due to the freezing temperatures.
According to initial information, the bus in Oberwart tried to avoid another vehicle on a road in southern Burgenland before crashing into the petrol pump on a business premises.
No liquid came out. The nine slightly injured people – eight students and one adult – were taken in three Red Cross ambulances to the accident ambulance at Oberwart Hospital. No further information was initially available.
The gritter ended up in a ditch
In the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district, a gritter veered off the road through the icy streets and slid into the ditch. In both cases the fire brigade had to take action for rescue or safety.
Black ice warning
Weather experts warned in advance of temperatures below freezing and the possible consequences on Austrian roads. Still, some accidents happened last night.
Vehicle rescue operations had to be carried out mainly in the Styrian districts of Graz-Umwelt, Deutschlandsberg, Hartberg-Fürstenfeld and Weiz.
