Already 9th execution – Another protester (23) executed in Iran

Date:

23-year-old Mohammed Ghobadlu took part in demonstrations in Iran shortly after the outbreak of the protests. That was enough for the regime to execute the young man on Tuesday morning. Amnesty International said his confession was extracted under torture.

Iran’s judiciary had accused Ghobadlu of killing a police officer during anti-government protests, reported the Misan portal, considered the authority’s mouthpiece. He was sentenced to death for “corruption on earth” and was now hanged early this morning.

No possibility of appealing against death sentence
As Time reported, many people demonstrated Tuesday in front of Rajai Shahr Prison, where the anti-government prisoner was housed, when they heard that the death sentence would be carried out. His lawyer explained that the execution was “completely illegal”: Ghobadlou was denied the right to appeal the death sentence. The young man was imprisoned for almost 500 days.

Amnesty criticized the fact that the death penalty was imposed in an unfair show trial, that the ‘confessions’ were extracted through torture and that Ghobadlou’s mental illness was not taken into account. The young man had been under the supervision of a psychiatric clinic since the age of fifteen due to bipolar disorder. International law would prohibit the use of the death penalty against people with intellectual disabilities.

Nine demonstrators have already been executed
The nationwide anti-government protests were sparked in 2022 by the death of 22-year-old Iranian Mahsa Amini. After her headscarf fell off, she was arrested by the vice squad and died a few days later – probably due to the violence during her arrest. The regime violently suppressed the demonstrations and arrested many demonstrators. The Islamic Republic has now executed nine people who took part in the protests.
