In Vietnam, police stopped a driver who was driving a tiger in a cage. The 43-year-old was acting suspiciously and so police asked him to stop, it was said. The man then chased the officers.
When he was finally stopped, he admitted transporting the tiger from the town of Dong Ha to the Huong Hoa district on the Laos border for the equivalent of €110. The big cat, which weighed 200 kilograms, was housed in an extremely small iron cage. Photos showed that the animal had almost no room to move.
The illegal trade is flourishing
Vietnamese police have uncovered numerous cases linked to the illegal breeding, trading and killing of tigers in recent years. In the Southeast Asian country, parts of wild animals – in addition to tiger bones, bear bile and various monkey parts – are used in traditional medicine.
Anyone who traffics these illegally could face up to fifteen years in prison. The predators are now classified as “endangered” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
