Dramatic scenes during a fire in a residential building in the small Upper Austrian municipality of St. Pantaleon. The person who reportedly jumped from the second floor was a boy only ten years old. He is now being treated in hospital.
Eight fire brigades, five rescue vehicles and the Red Cross crisis intervention team raced to St. Pantaleon on Friday evening (as reported). A fire broke out in a residential building where three families live.
Rescue via turntable ladder
Firefighters used turntable ladders to rescue a number of residents from the smoke-filled home. 14 people were injured, most of whom suffered from smoke poisoning. A ten-year-old boy was so desperate that he jumped from the balcony into the garden. The grass, softened by the rain, may have delayed the fall. The boy is still in the hospital, but is on the mend.
The residents of the house have been accommodated by the municipality in guest houses in the area; their apartments are currently uninhabitable. They are now trying to quickly find alternative housing, Deputy Mayor Nina Wolfgruber told the “Krone”. The Upper Austrian police are investigating what led to the outbreak of the fire. An e-scooter is said to have caused the fire.
