In Iran, 61 prisoners of the infamous Ewin prison have announced a hunger strike after the execution of a dissident protester. Nobel Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, who is also imprisoned, reported this on Tuesday on her Instagram page, saying that relatives abroad are taking care of her.
Female political prisoners in Ewin will start a joint hunger strike in protest on January 25. They are demonstrating against the recent executions and for a halt to the executions.
On Tuesday morning, Mohammed Ghobadlu, another participant in the nationwide wave of protests in the fall of 2022, was executed. Justice holds him responsible for the murder of a police officer during the demonstrations.
According to human rights groups, Ghobadlu was 23 years old. “The news of the execution of Iranian youth has caused a wave of anger and protest in society,” Mohammadi’s Instagram page said.
The death of a young Kurdish woman sparked mass protests
The death of the young Iranian Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini sparked mass protests in Iran more than a year ago. For months, young people in particular took to the streets to demonstrate against the Islamic system of rule.
The Islamic Republic has now executed nine people who took part in the protests. Amnesty International described the trials against them as unfair ‘show trials’.
