Explosive research from Germany: If you season your food with salt from disposable plastic shakers, you also add microplastics.
Scientists from the University of Münster and the Chemical and Veterinary Research Agency Münsterland-Emscher-Lippe have discovered that the problem is the plastic grinder.
Unground salt is already contaminated
The researchers compared three plastic mills with two refillable mills. These had a ceramic mill, but also plastic parts. It turned out that in addition to the salt, which – like much table salt – already contained microplastic particles when ground, even more microplastics dripped from the plastic factories.
In two polyoxymethylene (POM) plastic factories, the total number of microplastic particles detected in the ground salt was particularly high: according to the information, several thousand particles were detected per 100 milligrams of ground salt.
