The German Foreign Ministry has discovered a Russian disinformation campaign on Platform X. Experts conducted analyzes with special software and discovered tens of thousands of fake user accounts, according to a report.
According to Spiegel, there are more than 50,000 fake accounts spread over a million German-language tweets (between December 20 and January 20). The messages often say that the German government is neglecting its own people in order to support Ukraine. The aim of the campaign is apparently to increase dissatisfaction with the government and undermine support for Ukraine.
“Global threat factor”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin has long commissioned data analysts to monitor debates on foreign policy topics in online networks. In this way, attempts to exert influence from abroad can be exposed.
“Disinformation has become a global threat factor,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “It is deliberately used by those who do not share our values to destabilize entire societies – not just in Western democracies, but everywhere.”
