A church tower collapsed in the center of the small American town of New London, Connecticut on Thursday. A woman who worked at the church at the time of the accident was lucky and was unharmed. A surveillance camera (video above) recorded the incident.
Part of the roof of the church, construction of which had begun in 1850, also collapsed. Local police urged residents to stay away from the building. A neighboring building occupied by Connecticut College students was evacuated. According to authorities, the students will temporarily move to a nearby hotel.
The pastor of Engaging Heaven Church, which owns the building, said in a Facebook post (see below) that they believed everyone was safe and unharmed. “Teresa (the woman who worked at the church) is doing well! As far as we know, no one else was inside,” he wrote.
The church will now be completely demolished
“As you can see, we have had a very serious setback here in New London,” the city’s mayor, Michael Passero, said at a news conference. It’s a total loss. The remains of the church would now be demolished. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
The church is “a valuable historical building,” Mayor Passero said in local media. Their absence will “leave a gaping hole in our downtown,” he said. It is still unclear why the tower collapsed.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is investigating whether the air in the area may have been contaminated by the collapse. Connecticut State Police, city search and rescue personnel and public utility employees also responded.
