NATO negotiations – The Swedish Prime Minister does not want to travel to Hungary

Date:

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson does not want to travel to Hungary to negotiate NATO membership. He responded to an invitation from local Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and to a no to NATO from the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament.

There is no need to negotiate in Hungary, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said. “We are ready for NATO.” If there is a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, accession cannot be a problem. The two politicians will be present at the EU summit in Brussels next week.

Here you see a tweet from Viktor Orbán about the invitation to Hungary.

Recently, the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, László Kövér, said that Swedish politicians had insulted the Hungarian government. That is why he speaks out against Sweden’s accession to NATO. Kristersson now said it is not new for individual countries to take a different position and denied the accusations. Despite different views, anyone could be a member of NATO if he saw the need for cooperation.

Ratification at the end of February?
Now that the Turkish government has ratified Sweden’s accession to NATO, all that is missing is Hungary’s consent. The Swedish government and Finland applied for membership in the military alliance in May 2022. Finland was admitted as the 31st member in early April 2023.

Regarding ratification, Hungary now said that the meeting between Orbán and Kristersson would be awaited. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expects Hungary to ratify its accession by the end of February. Then Parliament will reconvene, he said.
