Over 70% inflation – Turkey raises minimum wage by almost a third

Date:

In Turkey, the monthly minimum wage has now been raised by about 30 percent in view of the enormous inflation. It will rise to 5,500 Turkish lira net (about EUR 316) per month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Istanbul on Friday. It is the second increase in a year. Normally, the minimum wage is only adjusted once a year.

Turkey is struggling with inflation officially exceeding 70 percent. The opposition believes that actual inflation is more than double the official figures. Food prices in particular have risen sharply in recent months.

President Erdogan blames global price volatility on domestic price increases, among other things, and rejects criticism that his government has failed to fight inflation effectively.

According to the trade union umbrella organization Türk-Is, the amount needed to support a family of four was 6,391 lira in June, nearly 900 lira more than the minimum wage.

The poverty line for a four-person household was 20,818 lira (currently around 1,200 euros) in June. The household had to earn more than twice as much to get by than in June last year.
