The suspected perpetrator, identified by the state police robbery squad, is a 23-year-old drug-addicted Algerian asylum seeker. Just a few days after filing for protection, he allegedly tied the elderly woman to bed, sexually assaulted her and eventually ripped off the jewelry she was wearing.
The traumatic experience robbed grandmother Helene, who was seen smiling into the camera while traveling with her son in the last photo two weeks before the incredible act, of the will to live. The 93-year-old then deteriorated rapidly physically and mentally.
The public prosecutor wants to investigate the causal link
Now the judicial blow: the funeral has to be postponed because the responsible prosecutor at the Vienna Regional Court wants to have the pensioner’s body examined for forensic medicine. In the dry official language, a possible causal link between rape and robbery or the tragic death of the 93-year-old must be investigated through a commissioned report or an autopsy. Proof is of course difficult.
If you are charged with murder, you face life in prison
However, if there is a documented connection, a murder charge and therefore life imprisonment is possible. It still seems unclear whether the relatives of grandmother Helene, who leaves behind two children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will participate in the trial as co-plaintiffs.
