An illegal settlement in the West Bank remains under military control

Date:

The area occupied by supporters of the far-right Religious Zionist party has been evacuated by order of the Israeli Defense Minister

A West Bank settlement built by a group of Israeli settlers has been short-lived. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has ordered the immediate evacuation of the illegal occupation, erected in honor of the spiritual leader of the far-right Religious Zionist Party, Haim Drukman, who died last December.

This decision opens the first schism on the issue within the new Israeli government, where the leader of Religious Zionism, Bezalel Smotrich, has gained unprecedented powers within the body that regulates the daily lives of Israelis in occupied territory, the so-called Coordinator of the Government . Activities in the Territories (COGAT).

Smotrich has denounced Gallant’s decision, which he believes ordered the evacuation “against previous orders”, without consulting the matter and “completely in violation of the government coalition’s agreements that form the basis of its existence serve”. In fact, the far-right leader has instructed the COGAT leadership to halt the evacuation of the settlement “until it is possible to have a conversation on the subject,” the Times of Israel reported on Sunday at the earliest.

The settlement is said to have been built by Drukman’s grandson near the Migdalim settlement and, according to the Israeli public broadcaster Kan, has already taken in five families who have already been evicted.

The area is currently under military control amid protests attended by two other ultras, such as National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and his ultra-nationalist Jewish power party deputy, Limor Son Har-Melech.

“When the Arabs build in Judea and Samaria,” denounced Ben Gvir, referring to the biblical name for the West Bank, “the government sits idly by, but when the Jews do it, it takes hours to destroy the settlements.”

The founders of this new settlement have specified that it was built near the Transamaria highway to change Palestinian territorial contiguity, while Drukman’s grandson, Neve Schindler, has emphasized that “it is the best way to honor his grandfather.” commemoration”.

“We are asking the entire nation of Israel to come and strengthen our activities and join us. The campaigns for Judea and Samaria – the Biblical name for the West Bank – never cease. We need you to win,” said Schindler.

Drukman was a founding member of the Gush Emumim (Believers Bloc) settlement movement, later turning to the right and far right from centre-right positions, where Religious Zionism now stands.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are considered illegal under international law, although Israeli authorities distinguish between those that have been granted building permits and those that have not been granted construction permits, such as the latter case.

“The government approves the establishment of settlements as long as it is done legally and in consultation with the prime minister and the defense ministry, which has not happened,” said a statement collected by the Times of Israel.

The prime minister thus lowers a rhetoric in which he came to defend, before taking office, that “the Jewish people have the exclusive and indisputable right to all areas in the land of Israel”, before expressing support for the “expansion of settlements in the West Bank” .
