The protests against right-wing extremism in Germany have apparently led to many parties joining. These include the CDU/CSU, SPD, the Greens and the Left. “An above-average number of new membership applications have been received in recent weeks,” said a spokeswoman for the CDU.
However, figures cannot be given at this time. They rose noticeably in the second week of January, a CSU spokesperson said. “In fact, we have seen increased interest in becoming members over the past few days,” an SPD spokesperson said. In addition, the left reported a “noticeable” number of people joining the party. Only the Greens gave concrete figures. According to federal director Emily Büning, 2,600 people have joined since the start of the year, compared to an average of only about 700 per month last year.
More than a million on the street
Since a report about a conference in Potsdam, in which, in addition to right-wing extremists, AfD officials and members of the Values Union and CDU also participated, there have been demonstrations throughout the country with more than a million people (see video above). This was welcomed by the government and the party leadership of the traffic light parties, the Union and the Left.
According to a “Correctiv” report, the conference discussed, among other things, plans for a mass deportation of migrants. The AfD denied this; instead, there was talk of deportations of rejected asylum seekers and the return of refugees from Syria and Ukraine after the war.
