EU President -President Ursula von der Leyen traveled from Brussels to Luxembourg for a ceremony. The route, which is about 200 kilometers long by car, covered it together with the council chairman António Costa and Parliament President Roberta Mesola.
On the Landroute, a ride from Brussels to Luxembourg would take about two and a half hours. However, it is clear that the flight was “considerably faster” than the journey of the car, said a spokeswoman for the EU committee. Due to the tight schedule, a charter flight was “the only travel option” that made it possible to participate in the ceremony in Luxembourg. The dense series was “exceptional”, the flight was justified.
On Friday, conversations of the Leyen, Costa and Mesola had conversations with the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In Luxembourg they then participated in a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Schumann declaration on the same day. This laid the foundation for the European Union (EU).
Private aircraft only in exceptional cases
With the chartered plane, the three politicians not only traveled to Luxembourg, but also back to Brussels. According to a code of conduct for members of the committee, private aircraft may only be used in exceptional cases to use sparing budget money.
Von der Leyen had already caused public indignation with a short flight in the summer of 2021. At that time she covered the 60 kilometers between Vienna and Bratislava in the air. Even then it was said that there was “logistics no other option” because the Germans visited seven countries in two days.
