Donald Trump must pay author E. Jean Carroll damages that could run into double figures for defamation. The jury in New York decided that. Trump walked out during the closing arguments.
Former US President Donald Trump is expected to pay writer E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million for public statements he made in 2019 denigrating Carroll’s rape allegations. A federal court in Manhattan decided this on Friday.
Jurors: Trump “evil”
The jury ruled that Trump must pay Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages – $11 million to finance a campaign to restore his reputation and $7.3 million for the emotional harm caused by Trump’s public statements that year in 2019.
Trump should also pay $65 million in damages because he acted “maliciously” in his comments about Carroll, jurors said. The amount is more than eight times what Carroll sought in her original lawsuit.
Trump leaves the courtroom
During the closing arguments, the former American president unexpectedly left the courtroom. Shortly after Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan began her plea on Friday, Trump stood up without notice and left the room, US media unanimously reported. After the closing arguments, the jury took over.
“The record will show that Mr. Trump just stood up and walked out of the courtroom,” Judge Lewis Kaplan said at the time, asking Trump’s legal team to remain seated. After a brief break following attorney Kaplan’s argument, Trump returned to the courtroom for his lawyers’ closing arguments. Why he left the room and where he initially went remained unclear.
