Hungary has been blocking EU aid to Ukraine for months. Now the German news magazine ‘Der Spiegel’ reported that the country was ‘showing signs of adjustment’. However, Budapest immediately rejected this…
In fact, the December summit should have agreed at EU Member State level on a new aid program for Ukraine worth EUR 50 billion over the next four years. However, Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán vetoed the decision.
There was a brief sigh of relief on Saturday. De Spiegel (Saturday, online) wrote last Wednesday about a meeting of EU diplomats at which Hungary reportedly announced that it would not oppose a new pot of five billion euros for 2024.
Budapest will not contribute to the so-called “Ukraine Aid Fund” (UAF), the newspaper reported. Nevertheless, Viktor Orbán’s government does not want to actively block the facility.
Hungary denies: “Exerting pressure is in vain”
However, these hopes for a possible agreement during the special EU summit on February 1 were dashed shortly afterwards. Hungarian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Máté Paczolay responded to the “Spiegel” report and stated that Hungary would not contribute to the use of further EU funds for arms deliveries, the online portal “Index.hu” quoted it as saying.
It is in vain to put pressure on Hungary and “spread fake news” – because Hungary’s position is clear. Paczolay also recalled Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó’s earlier statement on the rejection of an EU aid package for arms purchases to Ukraine.
