This Saturday there was a lot to do on the ski slopes of Carinthia. The beautiful weather attracted countless sports enthusiasts to the mountains and ski areas, but unfortunately several accidents also occurred. A striking number of boys were injured.
While some enjoyed the nice weather on Saturday, two young people from Villach had no luck skiing on the Gerlitzen. “An 18-year-old from Villach fell on the Klösterle run around 12.20 pm and suffered a serious knee injury,” an official said. He had to be flown to the Villach LKH by the rescue helicopter “RK1”.
Shortly before, around 11:50 a.m., a 17-year-old from Villach also fell – this time during the Pöllinger descent. “He was also taken from the RK1 to the LKH Villach with injuries of an unspecified degree,” the police officer describes the busy Saturday.
Flown to hospital with serious head injuries
At around the same time – around 12:15 p.m. – the emergency doctor helicopter “C11” had to go to the Nassfeld/Hermagor ski area to fly a seriously injured 15-year-old to the Klagenfurt clinic. The 15-year-old Italian was skiing down the saddle slope in the valley on her alpine skis when she collided with a 19-year-old man from Bosnia at the bottom of the steep slope. “Both received initial care from the slope rescue team. The 15-year-old suffered serious head injuries,” emergency services said. The 19-year-old suffered minor injuries and sought medical treatment himself.
Three skiers injured in lift accident
A more spectacular accident on the Katschberg had a milder ending. “Shortly before 11 a.m., a lift accident occurred at drag lift No. 9 (“Sonnleitenlift”), resulting in a total of three minor injuries,” a police officer explained. A 5-year-old girl from the Spittal district fell while riding the Sonnleitenlift on a steep section of 30 degrees. While her cousin, who was riding next to her, managed to hold on, the girl slid downhill. “Some of the next lift users were able to avoid the girl sliding down the valley.” But not everyone.
After the child slipped some 30 to 40 metres, she lightly touched two Croatian holidaymakers, who also fell. “The domino effect continued over an approximately 135-metre long section of the lift route, causing several people to fall,” the official said. At least two other people were slightly injured.
Other affected lift users were unharmed and left the site. “After initial care, the three injured skiers were taken to the Katschberg clinic by the piste service and treated there as an outpatient!” The good news: the minor girl was already in the care of her mother when officers arrived.
