A 17-year-old was seriously injured in the Kleinwalsertal in Vorarlberg during a descent in open ski terrain. At the “Gottesacker”, the young man, who was traveling with a friendly couple, overlooked a crack in the ground and fell into the depths, where he was seriously injured.
Around 10:30 am on Sunday, a 17-year-old man from Kleinwalsertal was in good visibility doing the variant descent from Hahnenköpfle towards Löwental at the “Gottesacker” with a couple who were friends and were following him.
Multiple terrain crevices
In this area, the topographic conditions occasionally show cracks, which act as terrain traps in winter and can sometimes be difficult to spot.
Fractures to the head and arm
The young man had apparently missed such a crevice, after which he fell about three to five meters into such a crevice. There, the 17-year-old hit a rock wall and was seriously injured with multiple fractures to his head and forearm.
Seriously injured rescued by helicopter
The couple was able to stop in time, immediately provided first aid to the seriously injured man and called the emergency call. The Mittelberg-Hirschegg mountain rescue service provided medical care on site before the 17-year-old was flown to the hospital in Kempten (D) by the Christophorus 8 emergency medical helicopter.
