Not for the faint of heart: Huge shocking photos now hang in front of the facades of the city theater in Gmunden, Upper Austria. They come from one of Austria’s most prominent artists: Gottfried Helnwein. The “Krone” was present to hang the moving art installation.
On Monday, hooks were installed on the facades of the town hall and the city theater in Gmunden. A short time later, a huge poster was hoisted up with a bloodied child on it! When you visit the local shop “Krone”, it quickly becomes clear: this will cause a lot of excitement!
A total of three photos are planned
A few hours later the second motif hangs: a child in an SS uniform. Then the artist Gottfried Helnwein came along – he is currently in Gmunden – and discovered that his shocking photos had been installed upside down. Everything back and forth, but now correct!
Moving, thought-provoking
However, the motifs retain their shocking element in every situation, although they do not immediately reveal everything. So you discover a strange smile on the bloody child. Will the child, the victim, become the perpetrator? Violence as a spiral? Gottfried Helnwein is a world-class artist and at the same time a ruthless accuser of a society that looks too much the other way.

He contrasts the innocence and suffering of children, central figures in his work, with abuse, war and violence. The third photo hangs at the town hall: Kissing Children.
After completing the Vienna Ringturm in the autumn of 2023, Helnwein is now breaking the idyll in the Salzkammergut with his provocations in the context of the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks and the Capital of Culture.
The official unveiling will take place tomorrow in the presence of the artist, and the “Krone” will report on it.
