Attack on Mona Lisa – climate activists must pay victims’ association

Date:

After the soup attack on the Mona Lisa in the Louvre in Paris, two climate activists now have to pay money to a victims’ association. The Public Prosecution Service announced on Monday that this requirement would be imposed as an alternative to a fine.

As reported, the two women splashed pumpkin soup on Leonardo da Vinci’s painting on Sunday (see video above). Because the timepiece is protected with bulletproof glass, it was not damaged in the incident. The climate activists, who claimed they were “fighting for the right to healthy and sustainable food,” were taken into police custody. The Louvre announced a complaint against the two.

Here you can see a message from the group about the campaign on X.

Activists: “Civil Resistance”
The Riposte Alimentaire group said it wanted to expose “the sick agricultural system.” It sees itself as a movement of ‘civil resistance’ that strives for radical change in society in view of climate change.

“What is more important? “Art or the right to healthy and sustainable food?” the two activists shouted after throwing the soup from a thermos cup against the protective window in front of the painting. Small amounts of food are allowed in the Louvre, although they are not allowed to be consumed in the exhibition halls.

The hall was closed for an hour
The hall was immediately cleared and cleaned and after an hour it was open again to visitors. Culture Minister Rachida Dati and government spokeswoman Prisca Thévenot criticized the action. As a cultural heritage, the Mona Lisa “belongs to future generations,” Dati wrote

In recent months, climate activists have repeatedly attacked famous works of art to draw attention to their concerns, including Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ in London and Andy Warhol’s ‘Campbell’s Soup’ in Australia. Cake was already thrown at the Mona Lisa in May 2022.
