French farmers blocked the highways around Paris on Monday (see video above). At a post on the A4 they received support from non-political quarters: the presenter of the French format of “Bauer sucht Frau” cheered up the farmers and brought them countless croissants.
The police were on site with a large contingent including armored vehicles to prevent standstills in the capital. For example, the two Paris airports and the Rungis wholesale market could have been blocked. Farmers in other parts of France also continued to block highways. “Our end will be your hunger” or “I love my job, but I want to be able to earn a living from it,” were the words on protest banners.
Test for the new government
President Emmanuel Macron discussed the situation with parts of the Council of Ministers on Monday afternoon. The protests are a test for the government under Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, which was formed just three weeks ago. Attal had promised farmers help on Friday; On Sunday, during a visit to a farm, he promised extra steps against unfair competition from other countries.
However, the promises so far do not go far enough for the demonstrators. Sometimes they also demonstrate against what they see as excessive standards and regulations, some of which come from the EU. There is also a struggle for sufficient income.
On Monday evening, Attal wanted to speak again with the agricultural unions who called for the blockades.
