Organic food in prison – Many save money, but luxury menus for port brothers

Date:

Last year, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) advised poor families to eat cheap hamburgers. However, the meal for prisoners will even be improved in the future. 25 percent of the food must be organic.

It wasn’t long ago that Nehammer heated Austrian emotions with an excerpt from a secretly recorded cell phone video (see post below). In the contemporary document, he suggested that poor people buy cheap hamburgers for their children from a well-known American fast food chain. And: if you don’t have enough money, you just have to work more.

A huge shitstorm and outrage from all political camps, from the social partners and also on social media rained down on the Chancellor. He quickly apologized, but has stood by his statements since they became public.

Gastronomic goods for prisoners
While socially disadvantaged families have to go to the hamburger joint, the food behind bars will soon be even more luxurious. Some prison kitchens already offer more menus than standard company canteens. A campaign that applies to all prisons in the country proves that things can be even better.

According to information from “Krone”, 25 percent of the food served in prisons will soon have to be of organic quality. This percentage should be gradually increased in the coming years. Now, even in prisons, there is nothing wrong with decent food that also supports local farmers and producers and prevents animal suffering. This seems strange, especially in financially tense times for many people.

Ministry: “naBe” also applies to prisons
Response from the Ministry of Justice: The Austrian Action Plan for Sustainable Public Procurement (naBe for short) – which stands for, among other things, resource conservation, regionality and animal welfare – also applies to prisons. “It provides for a gradual increase in the minimum share of organically produced food from 25 percent in 2023 to 55 percent in 2030.”
