The highly contagious measles virus is apparently circulating in the Tyrolean district of Kufstein. According to the current knowledge of the State Health Directorate, there are two confirmed cases. All clarifying measures have already been initiated, it was said on Wednesday.
According to information currently available to the authority, the two cases announced this week are not related. One person in Söll and one person in Kufstein are affected. Both were under medical treatment and are no longer considered contagious, it was said.
Find contacts
“All precautionary measures were immediately taken and necessary clarification measures were taken. Medical officials are currently working to identify potential contacts. People who may be at risk and who are known to the authorities and with whom the sick person last had contact will be informed,” explains Health Director Theresa Geley.
The fact that measles now only occurs very rarely is due to the high vaccination rate among the population, as Health Directorate Geley emphasizes: “The more people are protected, the sooner the spread of measles within the population can be prevented. Measles can have serious consequences, especially for infants.”
Highly contagious virus
Measles is a highly contagious virus that is transmitted through small droplets released when speaking, coughing or sneezing. As a rule, the first flu-like symptoms of measles in non-immune people appear about ten to fourteen days after contact with someone who is sick.
In the preliminary stages, fever, runny nose, dry cough and conjunctivitis occur. After three to five days, a large, blotchy rash with renewed high fever and a severe feeling of illness covers the entire body. If a person has been exposed to measles, early measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination may be used to try to prevent the outbreak of the disease.
