The Ukrainian government has largely dismissed a lawsuit against Russia over financial support for pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Both the first charge and the accusation of discrimination against Ukrainians and Tatars in Crimea’s Black Sea peninsula were not sufficiently substantiated, the court said on Wednesday. The verdict said Moscow did not do enough to investigate individual allegations of possible terrorist financing.
Demand for compensation for the downing of MH17
The claim for compensation for the downing of passenger flight MH17 almost ten years ago was also rejected by the judge. In the summer of 2014, the Malaysia Airlines Boeing was shot down by rebels with a Russian anti-aircraft missile over disputed territory in eastern Ukraine. All 298 people on board died. A criminal court in The Hague deemed it proven that the missile had been delivered from Russia.
Judge: Russia has not prevented further escalation
The UN judges also said Moscow had violated a legally binding order from 2017. The court then ordered both parties to do everything possible to prevent the conflict from aggravating. As is known, Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Ukraine had already taken Russia to the Court of Justice in 2017, long before the Russian invasion two years ago, citing the Treaty on the Prohibition of the Financing of Terrorism. According to Ukraine, Russian aggression began in 2014 in the Donbass and Crimea, which Russia continues to annex to this day.
Ukraine wanted to use the lawsuit to pave the way for further sanctions
Rulings of the International Court of Justice are binding. However, the judge does not have the means to enforce this. The current verdict is a defeat for Ukraine, which had hoped to gain support for further calls for more sanctions against Russia.
