A snow monkey’s escape from a Scottish zoo sparked headlines, memes and a lot of excitement for days. The animal could now be caught.
As the Highland Wildlife Park in the Cairngorms National Park announced on Thursday, the Japanese macaque Honshu was discovered early this morning in a garden where it was feasting on bird food.
The zookeepers tracked the animal with drones:
Honshu ran away from his enclosure on Sunday – apparently because he had a fight with his comrades in the monkey enclosure. Since then, experts have been searching for the animal with drones and thermal imaging cameras.
The escape of the Japanese macaque caused much amusement on the Internet, with scores of users posting artificial intelligence-generated images on social media showing the monkey in a kilt, perhaps fleeing from police, riding highland cattle or in full combat gear.
