Due to a smoke break, a Carinthian (50) was unable to board his train in time in Styria on Wednesday. Fearing that his luggage would be left behind on the train, he simply clung to the approaching Railjet.
The incident occurred around 2:30 PM after the Railjet stopped as planned at Bruck an der Mur station on the route from Vienna to Villach. The 50-year-old took the opportunity to leave the train and smoke a cigarette, police said on Thursday.
The human panicked
However, when the Railjet doors closed, the man tried in vain to open them again by pressing a button. After the train slowly started moving, he panicked and jumped onto a metal cover between the cars.
Witnesses discovered the ‘passenger’ and informed station staff. After a short journey, the alarmed driver stopped at the Niklasdorf train station, where the Carinthian man was able to enter the platform unharmed.
He is reported and faced with a cost estimate for the unplanned stopover. The man regretted his sudden action; he was afraid for his luggage, he said, according to police.
