In May 2023, a pigeon suspected of being trained by China for espionage purposes was captured near an Indian port. After eight months the animal was released from its ‘prison sentence’: the pigeon was innocent.
The poultry had been held captive for eight months at Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Animal Hospital in Mumbai: the rings on its legs had attracted the attention of researchers. These were engraved with characters that resembled Chinese letters. The pigeon was subsequently taken into custody for investigation.
The investigation showed that the animal was not a spy for China. Rather, it is said to be a racing pigeon that escaped from Taiwan and fled to India. The pigeon was cleared of suspicion of espionage and released by veterinarians on Tuesday.
“Dangerous” pigeons are not uncommon in India
It wouldn’t have been the first spy pigeon captured in India: In 2020, Indian officials noticed a pink pigeon that had reportedly acted as a winged agent. It was owned by a Pakistani fisherman. In 2016, another pigeon was captured: it carried a note threatening Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
