Dangerous oops – Tyrolean police officer accidentally fired a shot

Dangerous incident in Tyrol: As has only now become known, a shot was accidentally fired from a police officer’s service pistol on Monday. The man assumed his gun was not loaded. The Public Prosecution Service and the disciplinary department are involved.

What happened? The police officer was alone in a room at the Steinach am Brenner police station on Monday and was holding his service pistol. Suddenly a loud bang! A shot was fired.

Break through the wall to the Red Cross base
The bullet penetrated a drywall wall leading to the adjacent Red Cross building. Fortunately, there were no people in the hallway where the bullet hit at the time. No one was injured in the accidental firing. According to investigators, the material damage is minor.

Error while discharging weapon
According to police, a report on the case will be sent to the Innsbruck public prosecutor’s office. Disciplinary measures against the employee involved will also be investigated. “According to investigations, the police officer made a mistake when unloading the weapon as part of an exercise,” explains district police commander Gerhard Niederwieser, asked by the “Krone”.
