All four people on board were killed when two South Korean Air Force training aircraft collided mid-flight. As the country’s air force announced Friday, they were catapulted from the machines with an ejection seat. Yet later only their bodies could be found.
The two KT-1 aircraft are said to have taken off for a training flight from a military base in the southern city of Sacheon. On board were a soldier for pilot training and a trainer.
Crash a few minutes after takeoff
The collision happened minutes after takeoff. It is still unclear exactly how this happened. The KT-1 is a single-engine turboprop aircraft. It comes from local production and has been in use since 2000.
Church roof in flames due to rubble
The two machines crashed in a field near Sachon. More than 60 rescue workers have been deployed, according to South Korean media. A fire broke out on the roof of a church after debris fell on the building. The fire was quickly extinguished.
