Major search on Friday evening for a fallen 78-year-old. The senior slipped during the descent in the Gosau area at 8:30 p.m. and fell several meters down a slope. The man remained injured, but was able to warn his grandson with his mobile phone. Two hours later he was found severely hypothermic.
A 78-year-old from Steinbach am Attersee went on a hike alone towards Sattelalm in the municipality of Gosau on Friday. During the descent, the man came off the hiking trail around 8:30 p.m. and found himself in impassable, steep terrain. A short time later he tripped and fell several meters down a slope.
Grandson informed
He suffered undetermined injuries and was unable to walk. So the retiree picked up his cell phone and called his grandson. He immediately called the police. A search was started around 8:50 p.m. involving the Gosau Mountain Rescue Service, the Upper Austria Mountain Rescue Team, the fire brigade using a drone, the Bad Goisern police and the Gmunden Alpine police.
No information about the route
At first it was completely unclear where the victim was, as he could not provide any information about his position or his planned tour. Since the man’s vehicle was found in a hotel parking lot, the search began from there. The emergency services and the grandson repeatedly contacted the crash victim by telephone.
Brought to the valley on a stretcher
Finally he was able to see the lights of a mountain rescue search party and contact them. Around 10:30 p.m., the helpers found him seriously hypothermic and injured in the so-called saddle ditch. After initial treatment on site, he was transported to the valley on a universal stretcher and from there the rescue team took him to the Salzkammergut clinic in Bad Ischl.
