A fire broke out in a stable in the Tyrolean Pitztal on Tuesday afternoon, probably due to a defective cable drum. The rapid intervention of the alerted fire brigade prevented further damage and the majority of the animals were saved. However, all help came too late for a cow. The operation was difficult.
The stable fire broke out in Wenns im Pitztal shortly before 3:30 p.m. When the fire brigade arrived, thick smoke was already coming from the building. “After a very short time it turned out that there were still animals in the stable,” says manager Lukas Scheiber.
No fire hydrant, long water pipes
The Imst fire brigade with the turntable ladder was also alerted. Due to the water shortage in the affected Pitzenhöfe district, the operations manager quickly asked for help from the neighboring Jerzens fire brigade. At the same time, the Florianis, who had already arrived, started rescuing animals and fighting fires with heavy respiratory protection.
Emergency services were eventually able to get five cattle from the stable to safety and bring them outside to join the other 65 cattle. “Unfortunately, any help for an animal came too late. It could only be found dead,” Scheiber said.
A challenge was the local water shortage, as there is no fire hydrant in this area. “A 400-metre supply line was quickly built and established from the Pitzebach weir system to the tank fire trucks,” the operations manager continued.
Worse events were avoided and no one was injured
Ultimately, the emergency services were able to quickly get the situation under control and extinguish the fire. Spread to other buildings was prevented. No one was injured. “The likely cause of the fire was a defective cable drum,” police said. This may have set a bale of hay on fire.
