Parisians voted on Sunday evening to triple parking fees for sport utility vehicles (SUVs). The city council’s plan therefore prevailed. In the future, drivers of heavy cars will have to pay 18 euros for one hour of parking in the center.
In the rural areas it is twelve euros per hour. Until now, the usual cost for all cars was six to four euros. The city council had argued that there would be more environmental pollution, more space and a threat to road safety. Therefore, large cars such as SUVs must pay a special rate, it was said (see video above).
Neighbors etc. excluded
Only people who are visiting have to pay the special rate. Residents, but also healthcare services and traders and craftsmen are exempt from this. The scheme does not apply to private parking garages in any case. The more expensive rate applies to combustion engine and hybrid models that weigh 1.6 tons or more, but also to electric models that weigh two tons or more.
Hardly any participation
The city called on 1.3 million residents to vote under the motto “More or fewer SUVs in Paris?” Only just under six percent of them actually participated. According to the provisional final results, 54.5 percent voted in favor of higher parking rates and about 45.5 percent against the special rate for heavy cars.
According to an earlier survey, 70 percent were in favor of measures against large cars. However, only eleven percent said they wanted to participate in the vote. Slightly fewer Parisians actually cast their votes.
