Thomas Perkmann survived an apartment fire. His cell phone rang, waking him up. However, the caller on the other end of the line gave him sad news.
Thomas Perkmann’s life is suddenly turned upside down. Last week he was woken up by a phone call in the middle of the night. His father, who had been in hospital after a complicated stroke, had died. While listening to the terrible news on the phone, Perkmann noticed smoke in the apartment in Salzburg-Liefering.
“I just stammered: ‘Yes, thanks, but I’m on fire’!” says the 38-year-old from Salzburg.
Perplexed, Perkmann ran out of the apartment and immediately raised the alarm with the neighbors. Still in the apartment: Bärli, his recently deceased father’s cat. Only the fire brigade could save the unconscious cat after they arrived, the “Krone” reported. Almost a week later, Thomas Perkmann is halfway back on his feet. Beer is also doing well. He was given artificial respiration by paramedics and taken to a veterinary clinic.
Perkmann and his brother have already agreed to say goodbye to their deceased father. Perkmann moved into the apartment his father had rented while his father was in the hospital. The residence has been completely destroyed and has now been evacuated. “The smoke is in every piece of clothing,” he says. Perkmann, himself the father of a son, initially stayed with friends. But he has virtually nothing left.
The cause of the fire was probably a defective refrigerator. It is doubtful whether any money will ever be paid for the damage. Because Perkmann Senior had no insurance for this.
