The federal army has been using combat boots from a shoe manufacturer in Lower Austria since the end of November. Environmentalists investigated the matter and published research showing a “long and opaque supply chain” for the new footwear. Furthermore, the materials are said to come from “questionable sources.” The army defends itself.
In April last year, numerous media outlets reported that Austrian soldiers would wear combat boots from Lower Austria in the future. A total of 35,000 pairs were ordered for 4.8 million euros for the years 2023 to 2025 by the Rukapol company based in Behamberg in the Amstetten district (Lower Austria). Director Horst König proudly said at the time that it was the largest order in the company’s history.
