Vienna, Vorarlberg and Lower Austrians are already on their semester break, the other states will follow soon. That means: ski holiday! Several people were injured on the ski slopes of Tyrol this weekend. As the holidays approach, the Red Cross is reminding everyone to behave safely.
When many winter sports enthusiasts are on the slopes at the same time, the risk of accidents naturally increases. “The most common injuries are injuries to the extremities, especially the legs. Reasons include the lack of routine, but also excessive speed and overestimation of oneself,” explains Red Cross chief physician Wolfgang Schreiber.
To avoid accidents on the slopes, it is important to take good care of your body before your ski holiday, check your equipment and wear a helmet. Before you go skiing the motto is: stretch and warm up. And: alcohol is taboo!
Tips on what to do in the event of an accident
And what if an accident does happen? Then the following points apply:
- Stop and offer help.
- If the person cannot continue driving: secure the accident scene.
- Ask people passing by for help.
- Check whether the injured person is conscious by speaking loudly and shaking gently.
- If the person does not respond: remove the ski helmet and begin CPR immediately.
- Call 144 or 140 (mountain rescue).
- Cover the person to prevent them from cooling down.
- If a collision occurs, make sure to exchange the data. Hit and run is a criminal offense!
