Shock, grief and guesswork in the 1,500-population community of Reichenthal in Upper Austria’s Mühlviertel: A 38-year-old hunter celebrated Wednesday evening with residents of an apartment building in a log cabin. After midnight, the construction machinery mechanic took a chance 24-year-old acquaintance from a neighboring municipality to his apartment. But instead of a fling, there was a rendezvous with death.
While the young woman was in the bathroom, she suddenly heard a gunshot. She ran into the living room and found the 38-year-old. He was lying on the floor with a severely bleeding head wound. An emergency medical team performed CPR, but was unable to help. The injury was so serious that the shooter died on the spot.
Legal possession of five firearms
The man from the Mühlviertel had apparently shot himself in the head with a Walther PPK. Why is completely unclear. According to the initial investigations, there are no signs of a planned suicide. It is not true at all that he had taken the young woman home. The hunter had a firearms license and was legally in possession of five firearms.
An autopsy was ordered
Due to the seriousness of the death, an autopsy was ordered. In addition – to clarify all suspicions – not only the body, but also the 24-year-old was examined for smoke traces on the hand. Investigations have not yet been completed, but it is believed in police circles that it may have been an accident. Everything points to an “intoxicating action”. Possibly the fighter wanted to impress his “flame” with a pistol.
