A minister of the Russian occupation authorities was killed in the shelling of a bakery in the Ukrainian city of Lysychansk. His body was found in the collapsed building, Russia’s head of government in the region said.
“A combat comrade and friend who endured the forge of battles during the 2014 summer campaign was killed,” Sergei Kozlov wrote on Monday. The murdered Alexei Poteleschtschenko has held the ministerial post in Luhansk since the autumn of 2023. Before that he was head of the fire brigade in the region.
28 dead, including a child
According to Russian reports, a total of 28 people were killed in the attack on Saturday, including a child (see video above). “The continued attacks on civilian infrastructure, in this case against a bakery, are a terrible terrorist attack,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had previously claimed that Kiev shot at the bakery knowing that many civilians were there at the time.
Working for the front?
The Ukrainian army has not yet responded to the attack. However, the Ukrainian city government has confirmed this. The bakery was not a civilian target, but rather served the needs of the front. Lysychansk is only about ten kilometers from the front line. The city was captured by Russian forces in the summer of 2022 after heavy fighting, temporarily reducing the population to less than a tenth.
