Coordinated unions and employers’ unions reach an agreement and the strikes are called off

Date:

ELA, Steilas, CC. OO. and UGT and the employers’ organizations Kristau Eskola and AIZE have reached a provisional agreement for the called strikes. Deputies were convened this morning to ratify the text. LAB, a minority in the sector, has rejected the preliminary agreement and will evaluate it with its supporters.

The trade unions ELA, LAB, Steilas, CC. OO. and UGT met this afternoon with the employers’ organizations Kristau Eskola and AIZE and managed to reach an agreement so that the strikes of the 6th, 7th and 8th as well as the 19th and 20th are suspended. Deputies were convened this morning to ratify the text.

At the meeting, held at the Labor Relations Council headquarters in Bilbao, they agreed to increase salaries by 16%, above the CPI without government funding or approval to limit salary increases, according to a note from the ELA union. In addition, the agreement is valid from 2021-2024 and guarantees the CPI for all those years.

In terms of workload, according to the above-mentioned ELA note, the working time for teaching staff will be reduced by at least one hour in all phases and this group will also receive at least one hour of additional support. In addition, teachers in pre-school and early childhood education will receive a reduction in working hours of 20 hours per year and those of auxiliary staff by 38 hours.

In the case of education support specialists (EAE), in addition to the 20 hour reduction, they will receive more additional hours: three additional hours for those working full-time, two hours for those working part-time.

Kristau Eskola has indicated that “cancelling strikes has been a constant demand during the negotiations, given the negative impact the strikes had on students and family mediation.” In this sense, it indicates that “the scope of the proposals and the complexity of their development make it necessary that the negotiations be conducted in a climate of social peace.”

For its part, LAB said in a note that “there is progress in reducing workload and relocation processes, but equalization is being rejected.” It has therefore decided not to sign the provisional agreement and will “assess it on the basis for the final decision”.

The Social Initiative’s education centers in the Basque Country employ almost 9,000 employees in more than 200 centers and serve approximately 120,000 male and female students.

Fapae, Feguiapa, Fapacne, Bidelagun, all federations of AMPAs representing the majority of the families of the coordinated network of social initiative centers in Euskadi (they represent 30% of the families of the Basque educational system) had demanded it’s a statement “immediately” call off the strikes called for this week.
