The Ukrainian parliament has extended the martial law and mobilization imposed after the Russian invasion for another 90 days. A clear two-thirds majority voted in favor of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s bills, several MPs said on Tuesday.
The measures will therefore initially apply until mid-May. Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for almost two years. Martial law gives the military more rights. In addition, regular parliamentary and presidential elections were suspended. Only in exceptional cases are men of military age between 18 and 60 allowed to leave the country.
The secret service spied on journalists
Meanwhile, it was announced on Monday that a senior representative of the Ukrainian Secret Service (SBU) had been fired for spying on investigative journalists. According to SBU circles, the head of the State Security Department of the Secret Service, Roman Semchenko, was dismissed. The decision was made by the management of the Secret Service and approved by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Recently, several cases of surveillance of Ukrainian investigative journalists have become public. The case of the Bihus.info platform, known for its revelations of corruption, caused a stir. Their journalists discovered in mid-January that they had been secretly filmed and bugged over a long period of time. Other journalists were also spied on.
