The European Union Commission has set itself a lofty goal: the EU must be climate neutral by 2050. To achieve this, milestones have been set. By 2030, emissions must be reduced by 55 percent compared to 1990. Now a new milestone has been proposed for 2040.
EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra announced this on Tuesday before the EU Parliament in Strasbourg.
The move did not come as a surprise after a draft was leaked to the media in advance. The actual implementation of the new target will be left to the next Commission after the EU elections.
Climate target must “close the gap”
The new climate target is intended to close the gap between the existing 2030 reduction target (minus 55 percent) and the planned climate neutrality by 2050. The EU Parliament and the Council of EU countries still need to agree on setting and implementing the climate target . This should happen after the EU elections in June.
To achieve this goal, the Commission not only wants to focus on reducing emissions, but also wants to capture the greenhouse gases that have already been emitted.
