Monika Rammal teaches German and legal rhetoric at HAK Innsbruck. She founded the association “KAT6 Foundation Austria”. She calls children with rare diseases ‘zebra children’. Their symbolic animal is the “zear”. People who draw attention to rare diseases are ‘visible bears’. The association has been awarded the Austrian Child Protection Award twice. HAK has won the BHS Award. Rammal met with the “Krone” for an interview.
“Kron”:How did you come to found the association KAT6 Foundation Austria?
Monika Rammal: My niece Ella was born in 2016 and was diagnosed in 2018. It was an indirect cry for help from my older sister, who didn’t know what to do after the diagnosis. I thought to myself, if that’s not possible, we’ll find one. My dream job is to become a teacher and I have done a number of projects with my students, such as the short film “Ella” on YouTube.
