The rumor mill has been bubbling for a while, now it is official: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is replacing the army leadership after last year’s failed offensive. On Thursday in Kiev he appointed General Oleksandr Syrskyj, previously head of the ground forces, as the new army chief. However, Zelenskyj asked former Chief of the General Staff Valery Zalushnyj to continue participating in the military leadership.
“Today it was decided to change the leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said on Thursday.
“Adapting to the new reality”
Saluzhny himself said that decisions had been made to change tactics and strategy. The tasks are different this year than in 2022. Everyone has to adapt to the new reality.
The threatened dismissal of the popular Saluschnyj in the middle of the war, which had been rumored for some time, had recently caused a stir in the Ukrainian media landscape.
