The constant flashing red of wind turbines at night will soon come to an end. This requires an amendment to the Aviation Act, which must be adopted by the National Council in March.
The coalition partners ÖVP and the Greens have submitted a corresponding proposal, several newspapers report. This would increase the acceptance of wind turbines among the population.
In the future automatically when an aircraft approaches
The current rule in Austria is that a red light on wind turbines must flash continuously at night – for the safety of low-flying aircraft or helicopters. In the future, the lights should only be switched on automatically when an aircraft approaches.
Wind energy operators had long campaigned for this change, arguing that such “event-related lighting” was already needed in Germany, for example. Technically this can easily be solved with radar.
