Volcano becomes quieter – masses of lava flood the road in Iceland

Date:

For the second time this year, a volcano has erupted in Iceland. Lava was catapulted up to 80 meters into the air – the destructive masses spectacularly engulfed a road. It is the main transport link to the coastal town of Grindavík, where the kilometre-long earth rift has opened.

Dramatic scenes unfolded in Iceland after a volcano erupted on Thursday morning. Photos show a road destroyed by the lava roller. According to Icelandic broadcaster RÚV, the important transport link leading to the evacuated coastal town of Grindavík will not be accessible until further notice.

The destructive power of the natural phenomenon was also clearly visible from the airport in the island’s capital, Reykjavik (see video above and post below).

A passenger filmed the spectacle from a high altitude:

Lava fountains are now gone
In the meantime, the earth in the area is probably slowly calming down again. On Friday, livestreams from the snow-covered volcanic region southwest of Reykjavik initially stopped showing glowing red lava fountains after dawn. However, steam continued to rise from several locations around the eruption site.

The number of earthquakes associated with the eruption on Thursday morning has also decreased significantly since the eruption began. Icelandic authorities had already recorded a decrease in volcanic activity on Thursday afternoon after lava bubbled from an estimated three-kilometre-long fissure in the earth in the morning.

The liquid rock flowed about four and a half kilometers to the west and also damaged a hot water pipe, leading to an interruption of the region’s hot water supply. Emergency services worked all night on Friday to restore the supply via a new geothermal pipe. Energy supplier HS Orka hoped to be able to supply hot water into the pipe during the day.

Tourist attraction remained closed
The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal pool popular with tourists in the immediate vicinity of the eruption site, remained closed Friday, according to its operators.
