An Israeli medic was killed in an Israeli shelling in the Gaza Strip on Thursday. Two others were injured, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent Relief Service. The team wanted to save the injured.
According to the Israeli army, dozens of terror suspects have been killed or arrested during clashes in various locations in the Gaza Strip. The Hamas health authority said a total of 130 Palestinians were killed in 24 hours. The figures could not be independently verified.
Currently, the fighting is said to be concentrated in the southern city of Khan Younis. According to eyewitnesses, Israeli fighter jets also bombed targets in Rafah, also in the south. Residents reported that at least eleven people were killed when two houses were shelled. Tanks also shelled areas in the east of the city.
Fighting in Rafah?
This is now causing international criticism. “Rafah is an important location for the transport of aid to the Gaza Strip,” French Foreign Ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine said. It is a violation of international law to prevent civilians from receiving humanitarian aid.
US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said the US government had not yet seen any evidence of “serious plans” for an Israeli operation in Rafah. Carrying out such an operation “without planning and little thought” in an area where a million people were taking refuge “would be a disaster,” he said. The US would not support that.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have so far sought refuge from the Israeli ground offensive in the south of the Gaza Strip (see video above). The United Nations has now warned of famine in the north.
