The space travel of the future is commercial: government agencies such as the American NASA are increasingly outsourcing projects to private companies such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and Blue Origin from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos even offers space tourism. In addition to the space companies of the IT billionaires, who are now world famous, the gold rush in private American space travel has also produced some “underdogs”.
One is called Sierra Space – and wants to send its first private spacecraft to the International Space Station on behalf of NASA in 2024. The belly of the ‘Dream Chaser’ will have room for more than five tons of cargo, and later there will also be a version for manned space flights. Major tests of the spacecraft, reminiscent of a small space shuttle, have already been completed and the first flight is expected to take place by summer. In addition to the runway-capable space glider, Sierra Space is also researching other technologies – for long-distance travel in space, lunar and space stations.
